A male student was cited on an assault charge after he reportedly hit another male student while playing basketball Saturday at the Student Recreation Center, 1400 E. Sixth St., police reports stated.

Another male student told police he and the man that allegedly hit him, Arthur Rodgers, 21, of the 3700 block of North First Avenue, were playing basketball on opposing teams about 4:32 p.m. The student said he was "talking trash," as he said other players also were doing. The student told police Rodgers told him to shut up and said Rodgers said he would "pop" him if he said another word. The student said he continued talking and Rodgers struck the student with a closed fist on the right side of his face.

Police reports stated a "red, swollen lump" was visible on the student's face. Rodgers told police he did punch the student, but only because the student threw a basketball at him aggressively.

A Rec Center employee told police the student had been "talking a lot of trash," but added that "that's no reason to hit someone."

Rodgers was cited on a charge of assault intentionally causing physical injury and was released after signing a promise to appear in court.

A male student was arrested on two charges Monday after university police saw his car enter the intersection of East Speedway Boulevard and North Campbell Avenue on a red light, police reports stated.

Police were driving southbound toward the intersection when they saw a Ford Explorer, facing east, stop in the intersection while the light was red at about 1:17 a.m.

When the light turned green, the Explorer made a U-turn and began driving west on Speedway, police reports stated. Police stopped the Explorer at McDonalds, 1711 E. Speedway Blvd.

Police spoke with the driver, Seth T. Rhea, 19, a resident of Babcock Residence Hall, 1717 E. Speedway Blvd., and noticed Rhea's eyes were "very red, watery and bloodshot," reports stated. Reports stated police also smelled a slight odor of alcohol in Rhea's breath.

Rhea told police he had not been drinking but told police they could check his eyes.

After performing eye tests on Rhea, police asked Rhea again if he had been drinking, and he told police he had a beer at his fraternity house. Rhea told police he did not think drinking a beer would affect him.

Rhea was arrested on a charge of minor operating a vehicle with liquor in the body. He was also cited on a charge of failure to stop at a red light.

Police took Rhea to police headquarters where he submitted to an Intoxilyzer test that showed his blood-alcohol content was .065 and .049. Rhea was released after signing a promise to appear in court.
