GPSC to elect executive officers at tonight's meeting

Although 14 representative seats remain empty for next year's Graduate and Professional Student Council, elections for the four executive council members will still be held tonight at the new council's first meeting.

Only representatives may fill the president and administrative vice presidential positions, said Kathleen Fernicola, 1996-97 elections officer.

Fernicola, of the College of Agriculture, and A.J. Zimmerman, of the College of Law, are the two candidates for president.

Executive vice presidential candidates are Laurin Eskridge, of the College of Law, and Hau Nguyen, of the College of Engineering and Mines.

The seat of administrative vice president has one candidate, Lisa Rashotte, of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. David Bowersox, of the Karl Eller Graduate School of Management, is also running uncontested as treasurer.

The positions of executive vice president, treasurer, directors and committee heads are open to any other graduate students who want to become involved in GPSC.

Gordon Zaft, 1996-97 GPSC communications officer, said students have been nominating themselves for positions this week over the GPSC listserv. He said nominations will also be accepted during tonight's meeting.

This will be the first year GPSC has functioned independently after splitting from the Associated Students in February.

The move came after GPSC members said they were not receiving adequate representation in ASUA and would better serve graduate student concerns as a separate body, 1996-97 GPSC president Alex Sugiyama said.

Special elections will be held in the fall to fill the representative seats that are not filled, Fernicola said.

The colleges with vacant seats are: College of Business and Public Administration, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Health Related Professions, Department of Optical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, Faculty of Science and non-degree seeking students.
