Police Beat

A male student was arrested on two charges Wednesday after he removed a parking boot from his car near the Communication building, 1103 E. University Blvd.

As university police arrived in front of the building about 11:08 a.m., they saw a 1995 Dodge Spirit driving away. A Parking and Transportation Services employee reported that the car had been impounded and the parking boot had been removed, police reports stated.

Police stopped the car driven by Kevin D. Hamlett, 22, of the 5600 block of North Camino Esplendora.

The employee told police he had impounded the car for having outstanding parking tickets. He said he placed the parking boot on the front left tire.

The employee told police he passed by the car a while later and he noticed the boot had been removed.

Hamlett told police the boot was in his truck, and he retrieved it for police.

When police saw the boot, they noticed that the padlock on the boot had been cut, police reports stated. Hamlett told police he cut the padlock with a friend's dremmel tool.

Police asked where the tool was, and Hamlett said it was with his fraternity brother who was not around. He said he did not know the full name of his fraternity brother.

Hamlett was arrest on charges of criminal damage less than $99.99 and attempted theft less than $1,000.

When Hamlett was asked what he was going to do with the boot, he said he was returning it to Parking and Transportation and was going to pay his outstanding fines.

The boot was photographed and returned to Parking and Transportation.

Hamlett was released after signing a promise to appear in court.


A female student reported Friday that her bicycle was destroyed near Cochise Residence Hall, 1018 E. South Campus Drive.

The student told university police her boyfriend saw her Shimano Skykomis mountain bike locked to a bike rack on the south side of the residence hall April 24 about 1 p.m. She said her boyfriend saw that the bike was "totally destroyed."

The student told police she took the bike to a bike shop and employees there said they could not fix the bike because it was so badly damaged.

Police reports stated Parking and Transportation Services had "red tagged" the bike April 22 about 1 p.m., indicating that the bike was damaged then.

The bike was valued at $300.


A female student reported her backpack purse and items in it stolen Tuesday from the Drama and Theater building, 1025 N. Olive Road.

The student told university police she hung her purse with three various cards in it by the door in Room 110 about 1:30 p.m. She said she remembered looking for it about 3 p.m. and not finding it.

The student told police that "many" people were in the room, and she did not know who might have taken it.

The backpack was valued at $20. The values of the three cards were unknown.


A female student reported two slashes in the convertible top of her car Wednesday at a parking lot west of the Sigma Kappa sorority house, 1125 N. Vine Ave.

The student told university police she parked her 1991 Ford Mustang in the parking lot Tuesday about 5 p.m. When she returned to the car Wednesday about noon, she found a 7-inch slash and a 10-inch-by-6-inch hole in the car's top.

The student told police she did not notice anything taken from the car or anymore damage.

The value of the damage was unknown.


A female student who reported her purse and the items in it stolen from the Memorial Student Union Wednesday located the missing items later that day.

The student told university police she left the Student Union, 1303 E. University Blvd., about 1 p.m. after a lecture at Gallagher Theatre. She said her purse, which contained a leather wallet, three various cards, $20.75 in cash and a checkbook, were in a pouch under her wheelchair seat.

When the student was leaving Gallagher Theatre, she noticed her purse was missing.

The student told police at 5:33 p.m. that her purse and all the items in it were found.
