Sun Devil meet is 'low key'

If one were to look at the UA men's and women's track teams this weekend, one might notice that several prominent faces are missing.

There's nothing wrong, it's just that this weekend's meet is "low key" according to head coach Dave Murray.

The Sun Devil Invitational, which is being held tomorrow in Tempe, is an all-comers meet, meaning it is open to any athlete who wishes to compete.

"It's not going to be a strong, competitive meet," Murray said. "It's just a chance for some of our athletes to get qualifying times for the Pac-10 (championships)."

Among the teams the Wildcats will be facing are Arizona State and Northern Arizona, which they have already gone against in four seperate meets this season. Grand Canyon and a number of junior college teams will also be present.

"Most of our distance runners are still recovering from the last two weekends," Murray said.

Sophomore Amy Skieresz gets a week off after winning the 10,000-meters at the Penn Relays last Thursday in near-record time. Skieresz broke the UA and Pacific 10 Conference records, an astonishing feat considering that she was competing in the 10,000m for the first time in her career.

Skieresz and junior distance runner Bob Keino were named Pac-10 athletes of the week for their efforts last weekend. Keino was named co-Outstanding Perfomer at the Drake Relays in Iowa last weekend, an honor he shared with Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson.

Others that will not be traveling to Tempe include freshmen high jumpers Erin Aldrich and Tara Flaming, sophomore runner Emily Nay and sophomore pole vaulter Jussi Autio.

"We're gearing up for our May 10 meet (the Arizona Elite Classic) here," Murray said.
