Escort Service funded says ASUA president

Editor:

On behalf of the Associated Students of The University of Arizona, I would like to dispel any misconceptions caused by last week's message on the Escort Service answering machine and recent comments made in the Sept. 10 issue of the Wildcat by Escort Service Director appointee Tim Walker.

Although ASUA is unfortunately still caught in restructuring disputes with the GPSC, the Escort Service has and will always have adequate funds to operate. ASUA recognized that the safety and security of the student body is of utmost importance and is essential to molding a positive campus climate. It is also with this in mind that we continue to make the Nighttime Escort Service a priority within student government. The service, as it existed last spring, is currently operating. In fact, we expect that soon we will have received enough support from the campus community to launch our Walking Escort program in addition to our existing service.

Mr. Walker's claim that the Escort Service does not have enough money to operate simply is not true. The $12,000 currently allocated is more than enough money to take the service well in to the fall semester and additional funding for the year will be appropriated before the $12,000 is used. I hope that this corrects any misconceptions or misunderstandings, and again I reaffirm ASUA's commitment to the Escort Service and the welfare of the student body.

Rhonda T.L. Wilson
Student Body President
