The Arizona Cancer Center, located next to UMC, should have 30 new laboratories open by the end of the summer. The new space is the result of a $21 million expansion project that began in October 1995.

The $21 million expansion of the Arizona Cancer Center, which will house 30 new laboratories, is expected to open by the end of the summer, the center's development director said.

The expansion will incorporate an additional 58,000 square feet of space for cancer center research into a five-story facility adjacent to University Medical Center, 1501 N. Campbell Ave., said John Welty, director of development for the Arizona Cancer Center.

"We have a lot of funded cancer research and nowhere to do it," Welty said. "When we built the Levy Building in 1986 it was all we could afford. We knew we would need more space."

Before the expansion, Welty said researchers had to borrow lab space from other departments on campus, which is not a practical solution.

Dr. Tim Bowden, a UA researcher who studies the causes and prevention of skin and prostate cancers, said he thinks the move will be beneficial to his work.

He said his team is spread throughout the basement of the Arizona Cancer Center in four different labs.

"When we move, we will have three contiguous labs, which will bring the group together in the same area, allowing us to share more equipment and interact more effectively," Bowden said.

"We are very excited."

The expansion was partly funded by a $1.57-million construction grant from the National Cancer Center Institute, Welty said. The remainder of the funding was supplied entirely through donations.

Welty said construction on the expanded center, which includes a plaza area and an auditorium, began in October 1995.
