UA Sophomore Amy Skieresz is congratulated by teammates after winning the 1996 NCAA Cross Country Championships last semester. Skieresz finished undefeated.

The 1996 Arizona cross country season will easily be remembered as the year sophomore Amy Skieresz dominated the competition en route to winning the Wildcat's first ever woman's individual title.

"Any time someone wins a title, it is special for everyone that was around and involved," UA head coach Dave Murray said. "Plus, becoming the first woman at Arizona to win an individual title is very exciting."

Skieresz won the title on her home course, the Dell Urich Golf Course, distancing herself early from the competition and finishing with a huge lead.

"It was a great individual accomplishment," Murray said. "It gave her the chance to prove that she was the best runner in the country."

It was an overall strong year the women's side, finishing in sixth at the national meet. Sophomore Emily Nay, junior Virginia Camacho, and freshman Kristen Parrish all had strong years.

A bright spot for the men was senior Jon Pillow's last season, the lone qualifier of the NCAA Championships for the men, who received an at-large berth after finishing 17th at the District VIII meet.
