Women highlight year for track

The season of firsts is not yet over for the Arizona men's and women's track teams.

The Wildcats still have to compete in the Pacific 10 Conference Championships on May 24-25 and the NCAA Championships on June 4-7.

Sophomore Amy Skieresz accomplished two firsts this year, winning the 5,000-meter run at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March with a time of 15 minutes, 39.26 seconds, and winning the 10,000m at the Penn Relays in April with a time of 32:31.65,the first time she ever ran in the 10,000m.

When asked earlier this season if there was anything she couldn't do, Skieresz said, "Maybe not in running, but in lots of other things."

In her first year at the UA, freshman Erin Aldrich has won the high jump in five of the six events she has competed in. Aldrich's best jump, 6-feet, 3 1/2 inches, is the second best in the nation.

Senior Dee Dee Buzzi set her first school record when she won the 100m hurdles in 13.21 seconds at the Sun Devil Invitational May 3.

UA head coach Dave Murray noted that this is the first time in UA history the team has had two pole vaulters who've gone over 18 feet on the team at the same time.

Sophomore Jussi Autio vaulted to a height of 18-1 1/4 at the Drake Relays on April 27, joining junior Dominic Johnson, who vaulted over 18 feet last season.

"It's hard to look back on our season because it's not over yet," Murray said. "To this point, though, I'm very pleased with how we've done."
