A telephone switch module failed yesterday afternoon, causing 2,000 campus phone lines to go out of service.

Persons who called various campus offices between 3 and 4 p.m. heard busy signals, and those trying to call out on the lines heard no dial tone.

U.S. West Communications said they had not been notified of the situation by 3:30 p.m. but would look into the matter.

Dan Roman, manager of network operations for the Center for Computing and Information Technology, said the communication links that bring phone circuits into the modules failed.

"This is the first time the system has failed after six years," Roman said. He said he doesn't expect the problem to happen again.

The CCIT telecommunications department said they had received about 400 calls by 3:15 p.m. inquiring about the problems.

It was unknown how many telephone calls were missed during the service outage.
