Union is called 'Memorial' Student Union for a reason

Editor:

Regarding your editorial ("Peoples Union," Sept. 6), I have come to the opinion that you people on the Daily Wildcat staff have way too much time on your hands. Don't your professors give you enough homework?

As to why the Student Union is called the Memorial Student Union, you either are ignorant to the reason or just biased and chose to ignore the reason. The Memorial Student Union is called such in honor of those who died aboard the USS ARIZONA and those students and faculty who died in past armed conflicts. For your information, the Student Union contains a memorial to the USS Arizona which is located on the second floor. There are also memorial plaques dedicated to the students and faculty who gave their lives in war located on the first floor across from Caf Sonora. These plaques are sponsored by Epsilon Tau Sigma, The National Veterans Fraternity University of Arizona Chapter.

As for your opinion that it be called the "PEOPLE'S UNION," this is a university campus, and who does a university union cater to? STUDENTS. Granted, faculty use the union but students make up the majority of consumers on campus. Lastly, as to the "juvenile delinquents who leave trails of graffiti as they make their way to play pool at Sam's Place and enjoy the latest in arcade entertainment" as you put it; I can't think of a better reason why they should be banned from campus. Can you?
