Grueling interview schedule awaits UA presidential candidates

The UA Presidential Search Committee met behind closed doors Friday for about an hour trying to narrow the field of 104 applicants for the university's top post.

After their deliberations, the meeting was opened to the public, and an interview schedule for the presidential candidates was presented.

However, the candidate's names remain a mystery.

"As soon as we release their names they will be under intense scrutiny" at their home campus and at the University of Arizona, said Jonathan Schmitt, search committee member.

He said he would like to see the names released only a couple of days before the interviews to keep the candidates from experiencing excessive pressure.

The exact dates of the interviews have not been released, but they should begin by mid-July. Each candidate will spend one full day meeting campus and community groups.

The interview schedule is:

Breakfast with university vice presidents: 7-8:30 a.m.

Meeting with the search committee: 8:45-11:15 a.m.

Students: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Lunch with university deans: 12:30-2 p.m.

Faculty members: 2:15-3:45 p.m.

University staff: 4-4:45 p.m.

Academic professionals: 4:45-5:15 p.m.

Public: 5:30-6:30 p.m.
