- Harry Belafonte - Day-O! UApresents sponsors a rare public appearance by the pop superstar whose unique mix of Cuban, Caribbean and Creole rhythms formed the beat of a whole generation. Harry Belafonte performs at 7:30 p.m. in Centennial Hall, and tickets range from $15 to $35. Call the box office at 621-3341 for more information.
- The Faculty Artist Series presents Charles Roe singing baritone and Rex Woods on piano, performing Franz Schubert's "Die Winterreise," or, "A Winter's Journey." The piece is sung in English, and is performed at 8 p.m. in Crowder Hall, located in the music building, Fine Arts Complex. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for UA employees, and $5 for students with ID. Call 621-2998 for more information.
- Traditional tools and markings on toothbrushes show how Indian children coped with being uprooted from home and sent to boarding school at the turn of the century. The Arizona Archaeological and Historical Society presents, "The Archaeology of Assimilation: ASU's Excavation of the Phoenix Indian School Track Site." The lecture is given by Owen Lindauer, historical preservation specialist for the Arizona Department of Transportation. It lasts from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and is in DuVal Auditorium, 1501 N. Campbell. - The Steward Observatory Public Evening Series presents, "The Large Binocular Telescope," by John A. Hill. The talk includes a tour of Steward Observatory Mirror Lab to see the mold for the first 8.4 meter mirror. Following the talk, opportunities are available to view the night sky with the use of telescopes at Campus Station of the Observatory. The presentation is at 7:30 p.m. in Steward Observatory Room N210, located on Cherry Avenue, behind the Student Health Center.
- Kendra Gaines, of the Writing Skills Improvement Program, discusses "Writing the Personal Narrative" in a Weekly Writing Workshop at 5 p.m. in Modern Languages, Room 410. Weekly Writing Workshops are free and open to the university community. Call Donna Rabuck at 621-5849 for more information.
- A chemistry seminar titled "New Catalysts for Epoxidation" is presented by Brian Dangel, graduate student in the UA Department of Chemistry. The lecture is at 4 p.m. in Chemistry and Biological Sciences, Room 218, located on the Mall.
