The University of Arizona's Environmental Research Laboratory is sponsoring the first Solar and Renewable Resource Adventure on Saturday.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to dusk at the lab, 2601 E. Airport Drive.

"Solar energy has been around a long time. It's time Tucson got rolling," said Martin Yoklick, an ERL planner.

Visitors can pick up brochures from various event sponsors and local businesses that specialize in energy conservation.

The main attraction will be the solar village, a collection of three houses. Each was built with materials displaying different energy-saving technologies, including concrete, adobe, straw-bale and wood construction.

The solar village is a presentation of The Community of Civano LLC, one of the event's co-sponsors.

A standard feature at ERL is its solar garden where water harvesting and organic gardening are part of daily research. During the Solar Adventure, the public will be able to wander through the gardens and see presentations from local sponsors, including Trees for Tucson, a project of Tucson Clean and Beautiful, Yoklick said.

Compressed natural gas and electric vehicles will also be on display from Southwest Gas and Tucson Electric Power, two of the event's sponsors.
