After a frustrating start 0-5 start, the Arizona women's soccer team finally broke into the win column with a 1-0 win over Brown Friday night.

The Wildcats (1-5 overall, 0-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference) took advantage of an own goal from a Brown player to defeat the Bears in front of 879 at Stevenson Field in Providence, R.I.

Arizona remained in Providence for the weekend and played Temple on Brown's field late last night. Scores were not available at Wildcat press time.

Arizona head coach Lisa Fraser said the win will help how the team approaches upcoming games.

"It definitely gives you a little more confidence and a more positive attitude about winning," Fraser said.

Arizona's only goal came off the mishandling of UA freshman midfielder Sara Field's corner kick eight minutes into the game. After Field kicked the ball inbounds, a Brown defender inadvertently headed the ball into Arizona's goal.

"We just came in and we really pressured them and it went off one of their team's (players') heads and went in," Fraser said.

The goal was the first in the last four games for the Wildcats, who have scored just four goals all season.

Brown (0-2-1), which is unranked but finished the season ranked 15th last year, once again dominated its opponent but failed to convert on numerous shot opportunities. The Bears had 27 shots on goal compared to Arizona's four.

"Overall, I thought that we played a really tough game," Fraser said. "We just worked extremely hard to get the win. They had more of the play than we did."

She said the Wildcats' offense started to come together and create more shot opportunities.

"We had some great opportunities and we had some great shots on goal," Fraser said. "I thought our offense is starting to click a little bit better. We're still not where we need to be but our chemistry is definitely getting better."

Defensively, the Wildcats allowed the Bears a lot of shots, but senior goalkeeper Jen Weibel kept the ball from going into the net, recording nine saves.

"Jen Weibel had an excellent game," Fraser said. "She made some great saves for us."

Fraser also said that Arizona's defense did a good job of getting back up the field defensively and clearing the ball up the line.

"It was a game where everybody gave all they had and it paid off for us," Fraser said.

"I think every person worked hard individually but at the same time it came together for us as a team."
