Pacheco attentive to student perspectives

Editor:

I am writing in regards to the interview with UA President Manuel Pacheco, entitled "Close relationship between students and admin. not possible, Pacheco says," Sept. 18). I enjoyed the article - I feel that the Wildcat and President Pacheco both addressed our university's accomplishments, shortfalls, goals, and current concerns. While I enjoyed the interview, I feel that the title of the article severely misrepresents not just the content of Dr. Pacheco's statements but his actions as well.

As the student member on the Arizona Board of Regents, I have found Dr. Pacheco to be extremely open and accessible to student concerns. He has always been honest in expressing his viewpoints and opinions on issues that face the university. In the interview, his stating that "In a large institution such as the UA we (the administration) are never going to reach the stage in which 35,000 students feel that they are close to the president" is simply a fact. Having had the opportunity to meet with the president, understand the schedule that he keeps, and the many expectations that people place upon him, I have gained an appreciation for what he does do, which is a tremendous amount.

This is not to say that we agree on every issue, because we don't. But in regards to the issues in which we do disagree, President Pacheco has been very attentive to my presentation of the student perspective, and we have been able to respectfully disagree - I see no problem with this. I would just ask the Wildcat to present fair and representative titles for its articles. Regardless of whether we are students or administrators, we need to be able to work together for the common good of our university.
