Alleged victims of convicted rapist buried; search for missing children expands

LIEGE, Belgium (AP) - Belgians poured out their grief at church and home Thursday as two 8-year-old girls held captive until they starved to death - alleged victims of a convicted rapist - were buried.

The nationally televised funeral of Melissa Russo and Julie Lejeune capped several days of shock after Marc Dutroux led police to their bodies, hidden in his garden.

The discovery led authorities to intensify their search for other young girls reported missing in recent months, with the number of cases under investigation hitting 10 on Thursday.

Dutroux, a jobless electrician, was arrested after two other girls, 12 and 14, were found alive, but sexually abused, in his cellar in Marcinelle.

Dutroux, 38, broke down under questioning. He led police to the bodies and admitted to kidnapping at least two other girls, who are still missing.

Dutroux was released from prison in 1992 after serving only part of a 13-year sentence for raping five minor girls.
