Letter's claims about the Mount Graham telescope are 'bogus'

Editor:

I am writing in response to Sabine Wilms' letter ("UA cheats to avoid environmental law," Sept. 18) regarding the Large Binocular Telescope Project. First of all, I am tired of reading the words of misinformed so-called environmentalists regarding this topic. If you're going to take the time to sit down and write a letter, please make sure it is discernible and truthful.

Wilms claims the UA failed to complete required studies. It is quite obvious that Wilms failed to do any research before she wrote her letter. Had Wilms done her homework, she would have found that over 4,000 pages of studies were conducted by the university in conjunction with the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the Arizona Game and Fish Department. In addition to these studies, an on-going semiannual census of the red squirrel population on Mount Graham has been conducted since 1987.

Wilms' most bogus claim was about the work done for the project in December 1993, which she compared to the "Pearl Harbor" attack. Nice try Wilms, but the only thing these two have in common is the date. The work was hardly "clandestine." Once again, had Wilms done any research or cared to write about the truth, she would have found that the UA received permission to begin working on the site from the U.S. Forest Service and all other relevant federal and state agencies.

Wilms' letter is another example of these radical extremists trying to make up for the lack of any credible facts or arguments with outrageous and outlandish personal attacks that further prove that these people are not interested in any serious debate or discussion on this issue, and that they truly belong in the fringe.
