The screams and moans echoing from the Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium this month won't be from supernatural phenomenon out haunting for the Halloween holiday, but from the crowds of people watching the special Halloween laser show, "Light Fright."

"This is the first time ever that the Flandrau will be doing a special show for Halloween," said Michael Midkiff, senior technical director for Flandrau.

The show will entail the use of dazzling laser images, special effects and eerie spectral specters that will fly across the sky, Midkiff said. The show is choreographed to audible apparitions from the likes of Alice Cooper, David Bowie, The Moody Blues, Warren Zevon, and Johann Sebastian Bach. It will also include the classic hits "The Monster Mash" and "Flying Purple People Eaters" as well as some other ghostly surprises, Midkiff said.

"It is a laser show with a Halloween theme with different types of music from rock and roll to classical," said Josh Peters, planetarium coordinator. "It should be a really good show, with great special effects along with lasers and even some parts that are scary."

"Light Fright" premiers tonight during an open house at Flandrau for all university employees, faculty and their families. The "Light Fright" show begins at 5:30 p.m. in the planetarium. The open house is to showcase new exhibits and activities at Flandrau and runs from noon to 6 p.m.

"This is the first time that we have ever had an open house for the university employees and just figured that it was about time that we did," Midkiff said.

The show opens to the public tomorrow with the first show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets will be available at 10 a.m. tomorrow. The show will run through October with showings at 8:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

"Light Fright" will run all night on Halloween night, with shows at 5:30, 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
