Tonight's volleyball match against No. 11 UCLA at 7 p.m. is "Break the Attendance Record Night" at the McKale Center.More importantly, it is a chance for Arizona to get back into the Pacific 10 Conference picture.
The Wildcats are hoping for up to 3,600 fans, which they feel will give them a significant home-court advantage.
Tomorrow night's match against No. 18 Southern Cal will start at 7 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live on KAMP radio starting at 6:45 p.m.
The Trojans have lost three of their last four matches. Against USC, the Wildcats will try to continue their streak of winning every conference match they have played on Saturdays this season.
"I think we are in a position to compete with and beat both teams," UA head coach Dave Rubio said.
It will be important for Arizona to keep its early momentum. In its losses to Stanford and Oregon State, the Wildcats won the first game but were swept in the remaining three. In their win against San Diego State, they won the first game and held off the Aztecs to defeat them in five. That match was indicative of what they have to do in order to beat USC and UCLA.
Rubio said the Bruins and Trojans are very different teams.
"I think that UCLA has a little more size, while USC has better ball control and passing," Rubio said. "Last week they played each other with USC coming out on the losing end."
UCLA boasts the best recruiting class in the nation and has the winningest coach in the Pac-10, Andy Banachowski, in his 30th season.
Kim Krull, who has 188 kills and averages 2.8 digs per game, leads the Bruins. Setter Kim Coleman remains the floor leader with 362 assists. UCLA is second in the Pac-10 with a 3-0 conference record. The Bruins beat Oregon and Oregon State in the first week of conference play.
The Trojans lost a pair of matches to No.1 Hawaii and to UCLA last weekend in Los Angeles. They are the only team this season to beat Hawaii. Their loss to the Bruins came in a five-game battle. Southern Cal is led by sophomore All-America candidate Jasmina Marinkovic, the 1995 Pac-10 freshman of the year and considered one of the best middle blockers in the conference. She leads the Trojans in kills with 169 and in blocks with 50. She had a season-high 21 kills against the Bruins last weekend.
The Wildcats will have to change their line-up with the injury to outside hitter Carolyn Penfield, who strained her abdominal muscle in the second game against Oregon State last weekend. Senior Heidi Bomberger will replace Penfield in the front row.
"We will become a more ball-control type of team," Rubio said. "Heidi will give us extra control on passing and defense."
