Crossing guards don't work on campus

Editor:

As a full-time student as well as a full-time staff member, I spend an awful

lot of time on campus, in my car and on foot. I realize that this may be many students' first week away from home, but PUH-LEEZE!!! Does their

mother have to be holding their hand to remind them to look before walking out in the middle of the street?

I have just returned from a short trip across campus. While going a mere 5 to 10 mph, I nearly hit several students who nonchalantly walked in front of my car without even looking in the direction of oncoming traffic. And we are not talking about a cross walk here; this happened in the middle of the street in the middle of the block!

Could someone please remind these children that a crossing guard is not in the budget this year, and they will have to learn to look before they leap? It only takes two seconds, and it just might save their lives.
