Students are expected to be attending classes in two new buildings by the start of the spring semester.

Construction of the new Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Building, at East Speedway Boulevard and North Mountain Avenue, and the Environmental and Natural Resources Building, at East Sixth Street and North Park Avenue, is on schedule, and the buildings should begin holding classes in spring.

The $27.5 million AME facility consists of two structures connected by a bridge. The north side will be used to house departmental offices and research laboratories.

The south portion of the building will provide classrooms for both the AME department classes as well as campus use. AME Department Head Joseph Humphrey said nearly two-thirds of the south side of the structure will be used for other departments' classes.

Major experiments will be take place in the new facility, Humphrey said. He said he sees this as a link between his department and others.

The department would also be involved in many teaching experiments as well as social engineering, Humphrey said.

Across campus, the $11 million Environmental and Natural Resources Building will be completed later this fall and ready for classes in the spring, said Melissa Dryden, public information coordinator for Facilities Design and Construction.

Besides the department offices that will be housed in the building, federal offices will also be located there. With the completion of the building, the National Weather Service will set up its forecast office there. In addition, the U. S. Geological Survey will have offices in the building.

In midspring, the $22.5 million renovation and expansion of the Arizona Cancer Center, at the Arizona Health Sciences Center, will be completed.

The expansion includes 30 new cancer research labs, additional clinical research space and expanded cancer prevention research space. Dryden said the project will nearly double the size of the center.

Another building expected to be finished this year is the Marriott University Park hotel, which should open its doors Dec. 1, Director of Sales for the Marriott Sara Woodruff said.

The nine-story, 250-room hotel at 880 E. Second St., is just east of the UA's Main Gate office building.
