Compact disc trade counters run as fairly as possible

Editor:

I am writing in response to your story titled "Your used CDs for a fist full o' chump change," (Oct. 10). I happen to be the "pseudo-retro employee, complete with plaid shirt and Buddy Hollyesque glasses" that Fen Hsiao wrote about in the paper.

After reading your story, a few questions came to mind:

1) Why was I the only employee you described in your article? Did my appearance scare you? Was it the result of some weird vendetta against Buddy Holly or Zia Records Exchange employees DOES MY APPEARANCE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MY ABILITY TO DO MY JOB?? And finally, do you know the difference between a plaid pattern and a check pattern????

2) Are you aware that our trade counter, along with the other trade counters you visited, are run on a first come, first served basis? That means that if you come to our counter with a trade, and we are helping someone else, you have to wait. I know it can be frustrating to wait sometimes, but we are a busy store and are working as fast as we can.

3) Did you know that Zia, and the other businesses you attempted to trade at, sell CDs? If you did, maybe you would have realized that, as a music store, we have to cater to all our customers' musical tastes. Although you may not like Funk Essentials, Yes, Rush, or tinkling New Age, there is probably someone in our store that does. So be patient - we just might play something you like.

4) If Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is such a great CD, why were you getting rid of it in the first place? After going to three different stores, each of which had the same reaction to your CD, you could have come to grips with the fact that maybe a Jon Spencer CD, with "slight scratches" on it, wasn't a safe investment for our business.

5) Have you ever looked around a Zia store? If you have, you would have seen our book and magazine section. Yes, you can buy a book with your purchase at Zia too!

I would also like to say thank you for your tips on hiding CDs. You have proven once again that honesty just doesn't matter as long as you get what you want. It's a beautiful thing, isn't it?

I am sorry that you didn't agree with what I gave you for your CDs, but I believe that what I did give you was completely fair. You may have noticed the "Quality Inspected" yellow price tags we use to ensure we sell CDs that are in good condition. I am required to check all CDs for scratches, and if one is scratched, we don't take it. Sorry, that's just the way it works.
