This letter is in response to Brian Adams - Thies, concerning his remarks about homosexual Christians ("Homosexual community embraces spirituality," Oct. 18). He states that " ... there do exist gay and lesbian Christians that believe full-heartedly in the Gospel ... " I find within that statement a contradiction more absurd than the words "Pro-family, Pro-choice."
Mr. Adams-Thies, I fully commend and support your decision to follow Jesus and praise His name as a Christian. However, by choosing to live a gay lifestyle, you are doing the exact opposite from what Jesus wants you to do, namely bear your cross and follow His way. I fully realize that all Christians (including myself) are hypocritical to varying degrees, but what I want to point out specifically is that a homosexual lifestyle is so far away from God's will (as revealed through biblical scripture, including the Gospels), that by making your above statement, I think you must either be completely ignorant of Christian morals or just in complete and utter denial of the sinfulness involved in gay activities.
Whether or not you claim to be gay by genetics or nurture is completely irrelevant. It is still possible to be a healthy and resolute Christian in light of temptations such as homosexual desires. All that one needs to do is bear the cross of their temptation and use their struggle to become closer to Christ.
We all have to fight our own demons and sinful desires. I am a heterosexual that must fight the desire to have sex before marriage. I am proud to say that I am succeeding (and yes, it is very difficult to say "no" sometimes). It is time for "gay Christians" as well as everyone else to step up to the task instead of making excuses and justifications for our shortcomings.
No one should respond to this letter by saying we Christians should stop forcing our morals on others. We all have the free will to do what we want. I am speaking here only about those hypocrites who claim to be Christian and live otherwise. You can only have one or the other; there is no chose-your-own-religion clause in the Bible. I voted for God. I pray that we all do.
