Published evaluations recognize instructors

Editor:

I would like to give my opinion on the published student evaluations as mentioned in Robert E. Tindall's letter ("Student evaluations of faculty should be considered," Oct. 17). It is written in the letter that "last year the Faculty Senate endorsed the idea of having the student evaluations published." When I studied at Utah State University in my freshmen year, there were always student evaluations of faculty. Every course and instructor was printed in these reports every quarter, and they were put next to the registration room in the student center.

I think that is a good idea because students who are paying so much for tuition want the best lecture available. And, it is fair for students to get the information more easily and objectively on what the best courses and who the best instructors are from their peers.

On the faculty side, the better instructor should receive more recognition. The faculty members who have not been regarded as a good instructors should feel more compelled to excel in their teaching method. The university can also benefit from this by being able to monitor the students' expectations and satisfactions on the quality of education they receive in this university periodically. In conclusion, it is a fair deal for the students, faculty and the university.
