Criticism of Cornhusker football team is unnecessary and misplaced

Editor:

I am writing this letter in regards to Mr. Craig Degel's Oct. 16 column ("Thoughts on Kerri, Tiger and Jake"). Mr. Degel, it amazes me to read how quick you are to criticize what you don't understand. I am referring to your uninformed and malicious slams of the Nebraska football program. Last week, you stated that Tom Osborne would make a better parole officer than a coach. How can you make that statement about a man whose team has lost only one regular season game in the past 3 1/2 years? What do you base your criticism of a coach who has won back to back national championships on?

It is true that the Huskers have had their share of off-the-field problems, but no more than most other teams. Might I draw your attention to University of Southern California? For every Cornhusker that you slam, you neglect to recognize the off-field efforts of people like the late Brook Berringer. He devoted his time off the field to visiting hospitalized children.

Secondly, the reason Nebraska has to play Akron is that the teams that were originally scheduled to visit Lincoln next year backed out of their agreement. No other team, including Ohio State, would agree to play the Huskers. You also fail to point out future games scheduled against Notre Dame, Pennsylvania State University, University of Iowa and University of Washington. The Huskers do play a different non-conference schedule with games this year against ASU and Michigan State. You also fail to mention the annual difficulty of the Huskers conference schedule. This year alone, the Huskers have to play Kansas State University, University of Kansas, University of Colorado at Boulder, Texas Tech University, and perhaps another difficult conference team in the Big 12 championship game in St. Louis. This could be a team like University of Texas at Austin or Texas A&M University. Even though you may scoff at the Nebraska schedule, what about their wins in the past two years against University of Miami (Fla.) and University of Florida?

Now I realize that this is the UA and as petty as the university's football team is, it is still the university's team. Perhaps you should spend your time trying to find positive things to say about your beloved Wildcats instead of taking cheap shots at programs that actually win.

I lived in Nebraska for nine years before moving to Tucson 3 1/2 years ago, and my Husker blood runs deep. It upsets me when narrow-minded, envious people like yourself are forced to cut down the teams at the top in order to make the bottom of the heap look impressive. Since the Daily Wildcat has no coverage of other college football games that actually matter, I suggest that you discontinue giving your readers half-truths about other programs. Thank you.
