Look at rape victim's perspective before judging her actions

Editor:

George W. Bell shouldn't be blaming "Jessica" for her rape ("Date rape victim ought to 'take control' of her own life," Oct. 24). That is supremely insensitive. Her "boyfriend" should be in jail for a good long spell. And you, George, need to understand that some women will say no when they mean yes, but you had better take it as a clear, unequivocal NO! For your own self-preservation if nothing else.

No is still no, and what part of no are you incapable of understanding? I would rather have an unequivocal yes before proceeding. Anything else must be interpreted as "no!" and the man must behave accordingly! If you would look at Jessica's situation from her perspective, you would see how shallow and insensitive your remarks are. Of course she should have pressed charges against the guy and not tolerated his further advances, but she likely is very afraid of him in addition to feeling horribly violated.
