Candidates running for seats in the Arizona Legislature and Congress will be on campus today to interact with students and participate in a forum discussion on the UA Mall.Election Connection '96, sponsored by the Arizona Students' Association, is an opportunity for students to learn about local politics and get to know the candidates from Southern Arizona.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m., candidates will assemble on the University of Arizona Mall and follow previously-selected students to their 11 a.m. classes. At noon, candidates will return to the Mall to participate in a forum discussion focusing on education.
After the forum, candidates willbe able to meet students and distribute campaign materials from booths around the Mall.
Berry Melfy, Arizona Students' Association director at the UA, said she hopes the interaction between candidates and students will help students expand their knowledge of political issues and encourage candidates to learn what is important to students.
"I see it as a win-win situation for both parties," she said.
Melfy said exposing the candidates to the university will make them more likely to support education programs and funding when they are in the legislature.
"If you are familiar with something, you are more likely to respond to it," she said.

- United States Congress:
- Democrat Mort Nelson, District 5
