The Center for Computing and Information Technology is working to solve a problem that kept hundreds of users of a major UA computer system from logging on to their accounts yesterday.

The u.arizona.edu system began having problems shortly after noon, said Viji Muralidharan, principal systems programmer for CCIT.

Attempts to log onto the system to access electronic mail and other on-line services yesterday were met by messages such as "host or gateway not responding."

Late yesterday evening, Muralidharan said CCIT had not determined the cause of the errors, but four programmers were working to correct the problem.

People with accounts on the u.arizona.edu system can still check their e-mail by using telnet and accessing the address shell.u.arizona.edu, then typing "pine" at the prompt that appears, Muralidharan said.

Between 100 and 150 users were logged into the system when it went down, she said.
