Students frustrated about insurance policy, not angry

Editor:

Thursday Oct. 24, international students gathered for a forum to address their concerns relative to the current UA policy that makes it mandatory for them to purchase university designated health insurance. In an effort to clarify the Oct. 25 story, "Insurance requirement angers international students," I would like to point out the during the forum, the majority of students expressed their frustration with the current policy, not anger toward administrators.

Quotes in the story suggest animosity on the part of the students and ambivalence by administrators. This was definitely not the case. Students were visibly frustrated about the campus health policy, were critical of the policy, and sought answers to their questions from administrators but at no time did students appear angry or riotous. The forum ended on a positive note and led to the formation of an advisory committee and negotiations between students and Campus Health Services.

The forum was a result of a combined effort between students and administrators to address the questions and concerns of international students. Whereas the story may have led some people to believe that representatives from Campus Health and Global Student Programs were unsympathetic to their concerns, the fact is that they were very helpful, answered tough questions, and remain fully committed to addressing the concerns of students.

It is also important to note that the event was co-sponsored by both administrative departments and Associated Students. Representatives from Global Student Programs and Campus Health Services joined ASUA's Student Health Advisory Council and the International Student Association in hosting the event.
