A traditional "El D'a de Los Muertos" (The Day of the Dead) celebration will be presented today from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Kiva Auditorium in the Education building.

The Center for Transfer Students and the Spanish and Portuguese Department are co-sponsoring the event.

The central focus of "El D'a de Los Muertos" is an altar to the deceased that is adorned with La Ofrenda (offerings) such as: foods, flowers and candles.

A traditional altar will be on display and Alba Nora Martinez, adjunct lecturer in the Spanish and Portuguese, and Language, Reading and Culture departments, will explain the significance of the offerings, the holiday and its origins.

A live representation of the holiday will be performed by students in the Spanish and Portuguese Department and members of HEMBRAA (Higher Education Mentors for Betterment, Retention and Academic Achievement) in the Center for Transfer Students.

The performance will include prayers read in English, folklore surrounding the holiday.

The holiday is celebrated differently across geographic regions. Martinez chose the observation style of Xochimilco, Mexico State.
