UA sophomore Amy Skieresz became the second woman ever to repeat as the Pacific 10 Conference cross country champion on Saturday, leading the women's team to a third-place finish overall.Skieresz ran the 5,000-meter race at Stanford Golf Course in 16 minutes, 34 seconds. That broke the old course record of 16:45, which she set last year when she won her first Pac-10 title. She was 15 seconds faster then second-place finisher Kim Mortensen of UCLA. The only other runner to repeat as Pac-10 champ was UCLA's Karen Hecox, in 1993 and 1994.
Stanford took home the team title with 38 points, followed by Washington, with 82 points, and Arizona, with 92. Other UA finishers were freshman Kristen Parrish, who placed 14th in 17:44; junior Virginia Camacho, 17th place 17:46; sophomore Emily Nay, 28th, 18:03; junior Tone Bratteng, 32nd, 18:26; senior Viola Schaffer, 44th, 18:53; and senior Susan Scott, 49th, 19:07.
The men were led by junior Bob Keino, who bounced back from a sub-par Pre-NCAA Invitational performance to take sixth with a time of 24:30 in the 8,000-meter event. UCLA's Mebrahtom Keflezighi took home the individual title with a time of 23:45, breaking the old course record of 24:04, set by former UA runner Martin Keino, Bob Keino's brother.
Stanford also took the men's team title, finishing with 29 points. Oregon took second with 58 points and UCLA was third with 93. The Wildcats placed fifth with 112 points. Following Keino were senior Jon Pillow, who finished 14th in 24:59; freshman Micheil Jones, 22nd, 25:31; junior Chad Wenger, 28th, 25:52; freshman Jeremy Lyon, 42nd, 27:05; and junior Jon Lansa, 52nd, 28:53.
The squad will travel to Fresno, Calif. on Nov. 16 to compete in the District VIII Championships. A second-place finish for both the men and women would guarantee an NCAA Championship berth.
