Studied psychology at the UA. Dupnik has been Pima County Sheriff since 1980. Before this, he was with the Tucson Police Department for 19 years. He wants to expand the Safe Streets program and hire more deputies.

Ron Ochs

Republican

Received an associate's degree in law enforcement from Pima Community College, a bachelor's degree in public administration from the UA and a master's degree in management. He has worked for the Pima County Sheriff's Department for 22 years. He began as a corrections officer, then became a deputy for seven years. He was then promoted to sergeant, where he worked until 1994. He wants to decrease response time on emergency calls and add deputies to the department.

Treasurer

James Lee Kirk

Republican

Received a bachelor's degree in business and mechanical engineering from the UA. Kirk has held the position for the past 28 years. He is a registered professional engineer and the past president of the Association of Government Accountants, past president of Arizona Association of County Treasurers, and the past president of Arizona Association of Counties.

He wants to complete the office's transition from a central Pima County computer system to a more advanced personal computer system.

Michael James Stafford

Democrat

Studied nuclear engineering at the UA. Stafford has lived in Tucson since 1971 and is the former director of an AmeriCorps project for at-risk teenagers. He is the Legislative District 13 Democratic committee chairman and an Arizona Democratic Party state committeeman.

Stafford says he wants to incorporate modern financial management, sound investment procedures and proper job training into the treasurer's office.

Attorney

Barbara LaWall

Democrat

Received a bachelor's degree, law degree from the UA. She has 20 years experience in the Pima County Attorney's Office and 13 years as a Chief Deputy County Attorney. LaWall has lived in Pima County her whole life and is a former English teacher in TUSD. LaWall is involved in prevention programs for youth that include ACT Now and PeaceBuilders. She has community involvement in such groups as the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force and the Teen Court Advisory Board.

David White

Republican

He has been a prosecutor for 14 years and he is an instructor in Trial Practice at UA's College of Law. He started the Drug Diversion Program and the Bad Check Program and created a felony domestic violence unit to prosecute nd help prevent domestic abuse.

Ed Kahn

Libertarian

Kahn received bachelor of science and law degrees from Fordham University.

Currently an attorney in private practice, Kahn has never held an elected position, though he has been a candidate for TUSD's Board and the Arizona Legislature.

If elected, Kahn would try to start a county work farm and harshly prosecute violent crimes.

Assessor

Rick Lyons

Democrat

Received a bachelor of arts degree in government from the UA and studied law at Stanford University. Lyons is a native of Tucson, a certified appraiser and a member of the Pima County Tax Reform Committee. He worked in the Assessor's Office for 25 years, and served two years as county assessor.

Rex Waite Sr.

Republican

Waite attended Muskegon Junior College and the University of Arizona.

He is currently owner of Swenson's Ice Cream.

His political experience includes being a real estate appraiser, assistant vice president of National Mortgage Co., administrative analyst for the City of Tucson, state director of Manpower Planning in Arizona, Pima County assessor from 1991-92.

If elected, Waite's goals include restoring the office of assessor as the most effective and efficient office in Pima County.
