Fact of the Day

In the 1876 presidential election, Rutherford B. Hayes won by a margin of a single electoral vote over Samuel Tilden, 185-184. The vote was decided by a special session of Congress after 20 electoral votes from Louisiana, Oregon, South Carolina and Florida were disputed by both candidates. To appease the furious Democrats, Hayes agreed to serve only a single term.
