The Student Union Advisory Council has been working on behalf of student interests for the past year and a half, and now it is looking to fill their committees which provide student input.

The council, which was created last fall, participates in reviewing operational decisions and development goals, while serving as the sounding board for suggestions from the university community, said Gilbert Davidson, an Undergraduate Senator and chairman of the council.

Four committees are derived from the council, which consists of student volunteers in the areas of marketing, operations, food service and student programs.

"If students want to get involved and have opinions about what they see and what they don't see in the Union the advisory council is a place where their concerns can be heard," Davidson said.

Gretchen Hebekeuser, who serves on the food service committee, said, "If a change needs to be made, I can be influential by directing it to the council."

Voting members of the council consist of nine students, one staff member from the Department of Student Publications and three faculty members. The director, associate and assistant directors of the Memorial Student Union serve on the board as nonvoting members.

Dan Adams, Student Union Director, said the council was created as a vehicle for student input on the operations of the Student Union.

"The union is the hub of student activity," he said. "We feel it is necessary to listen to what the students are saying."

The council has heard issues pertaining to smoking in the Memorial Student Union, passed a resolution regarding vendors soliciting credit card applications and will evaluate the proposal regarding the Union's fate.

Last month, the council approved an increase in fees for credit card vendors who reserve space in the Union and eliminated the use of premiums as a form of enticement.

They also heard complaints about smokers on the Union's dining terrace but decided not to change the existing smoking policy, which allows smoking on the outside terrace.

Union officials are expecting a proposal later this month that determines the Memorial Student Union's fate. Taking into consideration the opinion of the council, Union officials will decide whether to renovate the Union or to demolish it and rebuild from scratch.

"The Union is the heart of the campus," Davidson said. "Many people on campus have a stake in how the Union is run."

Anyone interested in joining the committee can contact the office of the Memorial Student Union, located on the building's third floor.
