Thoughts on sibling (and state) rivalry

My brother told me last week that he had decided to go to Arizona State.

For a minute I thought I would rather have him tell me he was entering the priesthood.

Then I sat back and thought about things for a while.

Of course, if I went to UCLA, he would have gone to Southern Cal. If I had gone to Harvard - hey, that's a good one - he would have gone to Yale.

So, I have to say, I half-expected it. Sometimes I even wonder if we're related because we're such opposites.

He played soccer. I played football.

He likes math. I would tell you two plus two equals five.

I like American history. My brother would tell you the War of 1812 started in 1813.

He swims. I sink.

He hates westerns. "Tombstone" is one my favorite movies.

I've been known to drink more than my share at parties. He says he drinks for taste. Ah, to be young again.

He wears boxers. I wear ... Well, maybe that's more about my family than you need to know, but I think you get my point.

If he knew I was going to heaven, I kid you not, the boy would probably by a piece of land somewhere in the underworld.

Things could get interesting around the Degel household during the holidays, though, especially if the Sun Devils start beating the UA football team on a regular basis. I'd have to wait until the basketball season to exact some revenge, but then I couldn't rub it in until summer.

I'll admit, I liked that Arizona had a decent athletic program when I chose schools. Of course, my brother insists that the Sun Devils football team's 10-0 record and No. 4 ranking had nothing to do with his decision.

The funny thing is that I believe him. Maybe that's why it doesn't bother me so much. If this situation was going to turn into a pissing contest, I might be worried.

My brother doesn't boast a whole lot unless he knows he has the upper hand, which is why I never play tennis with him.

Of course, as soon as Arizona State wins something important - which could be on Jan. 1 - my brother will be the first person to call me.

I really hope my brother does well in college. To be safe, though, maybe I'll just disconnect my phone ... for the next 40 years.
