Dead right

Beau John Greene murdered UA music professor Roy A. Johnson, and Greene was sentenced to death on Monday. Thankfully, the judicial system realized that barbaric punishments are needed to eliminate barbarians.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Bernardo Velasco did the right thing when he imposed the death penalty on Beau John Greene.

Greene, 29, was found guilty of murdering UA music professor Roy A. Johnson in March, 1995.

The professor never came home from a concert at a Green Valley church on Feb. 28, 1995. Instead, Johnson's badly beaten body was found four days later in a shallow wash. He was wearing the same black tuxedo he wore to the concert, and he was surrounded by personal belongings.

But Greene didn't leave all of Johnson's belongings next to his decaying body. No, he jumped around Green Valley and used Johnson's credit cards at numerous department and specialty stores. He bought camping equipment and electronics components. He bought food. Remember, a killer has to eat too.

Greene deserved the death penalty. He was found guilty of murdering an innocent citizen. He killed Johnson, then had the gall to use his credit cards to buy camping equipment. His conscience must have really been weighing him down.

He, and all convicted murderers, deserve to pay the ultimate price for their acts. By taking another's life, murderers abuse the fragile trusts and freedoms granted to them by the Constitution.

We cannot as a society be afraid to put those people to death. We cannot be afraid of sending a message saying that Americans will not tolerate heinous acts like the one committed by Beau John Greene.

Murderers rape innocent victims of their life and then put loved ones through a living hell. Offering life sentences on silver platters to murderers downplays the severity of the crime. By allowing them to spend their lives as prisoners, we allow them some of the very freedoms they took from their victims.

Beau John Greene testified that he killed Johnson with three or four punches. Thankfully, Beau John Greene just got punched by the judicial system.
