Freshmen will be exposed to campus organizations and services at a forum tonight."The forum is to help students who want to become involved but don't know what is out there or where to begin," said Melissa Schiffman, psychology freshman and member of the Associated Students Freshmen Council.
The five-member council organized the event in an effort to educate freshmen about resources available at the University of Arizona.
"The council's mission is to increase freshmen involvement in activities on campus," said David Ng, biochemistry freshman and member of the council.
"The forum was the main goal of the council," he said. "If this turns out well, we have fulfilled our mission statement by helping freshmen students to get involved with the campus."
The freshman forum will be held at the Memorial Student Union's Arizona Ballroom from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. UA President Manuel Pacheco, ASUA President Rhonda Wilson and Carol Thompson, associate dean of students, will be speaking.
After 30 minutes of speeches, participants can interact with representatives of the 20 clubs and organizations and university services that will have tables there. Some of the university services attending are Student Recreation Center, Minority Student Service and the Residence Hall Association.
"Having these services present at the forum will allow freshmen the opportun-ity to ask questions and learn about what the services do," said Bennie Spencer, political science freshman and council member.
Wilson said she created the Freshmen Council in an effort to give freshmen a voice. "The council has done a great job organizing this event," she said.
Initially it was created to assist Wilson but now its responsibilities have branched throughout ASUA. The council helped the Arizona Students' Assoc-iation and ASUA with the voter registration drive, and are working on generating funds for KAMP radio.
"The council has been a great stepping stone within ASUA and has opened many doors that will help me in my career," Ng said.
