A male student was cited for theft Thursday after a stolen parking permit was discovered hanging in his car, police reports stated.A Parking and Transportation Services employee noticed the permit hanging in a Toyota pickup truck in Lot 6092, East Sixth Street and North Highland Avenue. An immobilizing "boot" was put on the truck.
University police met the truck's owner, Jeffrey M. Ochoa, 19, a resident of Hopi Residence Hall, 1440 E. Fourth St., at Parking and Transportation Services, 888 N. Euclid Ave.
"I knew this was coming," Ochoa told police, according to police reports. He said he bought the Zone 1 permit during fraternity rush from a man at the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house for $200. He said the man was not a Pi Kappa Alpha member.
Ochoa told police he used the permit to park on campus between 20 and 30 times, mainly in Lot 6092.
The permit had been reported stolen Sept. 8. It was valued at $160. Ochoa was cited for theft of services and released at the scene.
A Jeep was vandalized Wednesday while parked in Lot 4073 at North Campbell Avenue and East First Street.A female employee told police she parked her Jeep Grand Cherokee in the lot at 9:30 a.m. A co-worker noticed the rear passenger's-side tire had been slashed at 5:10 p.m. The tire was valued at $96.
A stereo was reported stolen Thursday from a truck parked south of Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St.
A male student said he parked his Toyota truck sometime Wednesday and returned Thursday at 10 a.m. to find his passenger's-side door open and his stereo missing. Also, the center console of the dashboard had been torn out.
Several compact discs stored in the door were still there. There were no signs of forced entry. The value of the Sony AM/FM CD stereo was unknown.
A Tucson man's bicycle was stolen Thursday from outside Modern Languages, 1423 E. University Blvd.
The man secured his bicycle with a cable lock to a rack west of the building at 10:45 a.m. while he took care of personal business on campus. When he returned at 11:20 a.m., the bicycle was gone.
The silver Specialized Hard Rock bicycle was valued at $300. The cable lock's value was unknown.
Two textbooks were taken Tuesday from the Harshbarger Building, 1133 E. North Campus Drive.
A male student told police the texts were taken from the top left drawer of his desk between noon and 3 p.m. The student asked a professor to make an announcement about the missing books in class, but the books were not returned.
On Thursday, the student notified the UofA Associated Students Bookstore that his texts had been taken. The bookstore said two books matching the description he provided had been sold back Tuesday at 1:17 p.m.
The texts, Computers and Design, and Discrete Mathematics , were valued at $60 and $75.
The case remains open.
A female student was arrested on DUI charges Thursday after university police saw her car weaving on East Speedway Boulevard.
Police reports gave this account:
Officers were driving west on Speedway at 1:33 a.m. when they saw Abby L. Obery, 18, a resident of Coconino Residence Hall, 1003 N. Olive Road, weaving back and forth in her red Nissan Sentra.
Pulling into the left turn lane at North Park Avenue, Obery stopped her car one car length over the crosswalk and into the intersection. The light was red. Police stopped Obery in the parking lot north of Carl's Jr., 1001 N. Park Ave.
When police approached the car, they smelled an excessive amount of perfumes and noticed Obery's eyes were "glassy." When police spoke to Obery, they smelled alcohol on her breath.
Obery told police she had not been drinking and agreed to take field sobriety tests, after which, she was taken to police headquarters.
Intoxilyzer tests at police headquarters showed Obery's blood-alcohol content to be .167 and .178.
Obery was cited on charges of DUI physical control, DUI physical control with a blood alcohol content greater than .10, and minor operating a vehicle with liquor in body. She was released to a taxi cab.
