Daniel D. Evans, professor emeritus of Hydrology and Water Resources and member of the original disciplinary committee that made the UA Hydrology program a separate department, died in his home Wednesday evening after an extended battle with myelodystlacia, a bone-marrow disorder. He was 76.

"He was a man with a loving family and a tremendous number of friends," his son, Tom Evans, said.

In addition to Tom, Evans is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Fran Merdink; his son Bob; daughter Sue Holstad and eight grandchildren.

Evans began his 26-year career at the University of Arizona in the College of Agriculture as a professor of agricultural chemistry and soils in 1963. In 1964, he joined the interdisciplinary hydrology program, according to a news release from the Hydrology and Water Resources Department.

Evans served as Hydrology and Water Resources department head from 1970 to 1974 and then again in 1989 following the retirement of Nathan Buras. Evans retired when a permanent department head was selected that same year.

In addition to Evans' activities at the UA, he was also active in professional organizations and served as president of the American Water Resources Association and the Universities Council on Water Resources.

Evans was also a key principal investigator for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission project, the press release stated.

Services were held Saturday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, 750 W. Chapala Drive.
