Hoon's talent as lyricist 'far exceeds his other gifts'

Editor:

This is in response to the Nov. 21 story by Doug Levy on Blind Melon ("New sight for 'Blind' fans). I couldn't agree more with your critique of a band I grew to love in the summer of 1993. Losing Shannon Hoon was very difficult. He was an extremely talented person with an extraordinary voice.

But his ability as a lyricist far exceeds his other gifts. For those of you who own the first album but haven't listened to it since you played yourself out on "No Rain," I urge you to give it another shot. Listen to it from beginning to end. Take a look at the lyrics to some of those songs. I guarantee you'll get more out of it.

Shannon Hoon is another of the many who died in their prime, leaving us to wonder what would have come from them next, but never getting an answer. I'm just glad I got to see him perform once, a short week before his untimely death. It is an experience that I feel lucky to have had.
