A male student cut off his big toe Saturday in Life Sciences North, 1333 N. Martin Ave.University police were called Saturday at 10:32 p.m. to the building in response to an injury report. They found the student standing outside the building by its east staircase.
The student's right big toe was hanging from his foot by a flap of skin.
The student told police he was a graduate student working alone in a lab. He said a friend had challenged him to cut off his toe.
Police asked him who the person was and if he had actually heard a voice challenge him. The student said it was a person, not a voice, but he did not want to tell police the name of the friend.
Tucson Fire Department paramedics took the student to the University Medical Center.
Police followed a trail of blood to a third floor room, where they saw wire cutters, a rolled up sock and a shoe.
Later, police spoke with the student at UMC. He told officers his friend's name was "Abcorn Rosenweig" and that the story that led to his injury was a long one. He did not want to tell the police the story.
A doctor told police the student would be held over night and given a psychiatric evaluation.
A male student was reportedly assaulted Sunday outside Centennial Hall, 1020 E. University Blvd.
The student told university police he was walking home from North Fourth Avenue Sunday at 12:20 a.m. when the occupants of a gold compact car started yelling at him.
"Why are you dressed like that?" they yelled.
Three men got out of the car and began to punch the student in the head and torso, the student told police. The student said he fell to the ground and the men began kicking him, then left.
The student had small bruises and scrapes on his back. He said he could not identify his assailants.
A dune buggy was reported stolen Monday from outside Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, 1247 E. North Campus Drive.
The buggy, which belongs to the Society of Automotive Engineers, was last seen Friday at 5 p.m., the president of the group told university police. The buggy was discovered missing Monday at 8 a.m.
The red dune buggy, which had no motor, was hand-made by the society and had no vehicle identification number or registration. It was valued at $2,500.
Four parking meters were reported taken Monday from Lot 6093 at East University Boulevard and North Cherry Avenue.
A Parking and Transportation Services employee told university police he went to the lot to collect money from the meters Monday at 7:10 a.m. When the employee arrived, the meters were gone. The employee told police the meters were last seen Friday at 3 p.m.
The employee said that meters usually have about $30 in them when they are emptied.
The meters were valued at $450. Three meter brackets, valued at $25 each, were also taken.
A mobile telephone was taken Saturday from Arizona Stadium, 541 N. Vine Ave.
A Tucson man told university police he noticed the phone missing Saturday at 8 p.m. while he watched the UA-ASU game.
According to police reports, another spectator told the man that a "young kid" had taken the phone, saying he was going to take it to the lost and found.
The phone was not in lost and found, and it had not been turned in to university police either.
The Motorola Microtech Elite telephone was valued at $1,000.
A male student called university police Monday to report his car stolen from Lot 9002 at East Speedway Boulevard and North Campbell Avenue.
The student said he parked his 1988 Buick Skylark in the lot Sunday at 5 p.m. He discovered the car missing Monday about 2:30 p.m.
Police ran a computer check on the car and discovered it had been recovered by the Tucson Police Department sometime Monday. According to police reports, the car was found abandoned at East Fairview Avenue and West Calle Retama.
The student was informed of the car's whereabouts.
