Former California high school football star Leodes Van Buren has been admitted at Arizona but has yet to enroll in classes, an employee with the registrar's office said yesterday. The Ventura County (Calif.) Star reported on Tuesday that Van Buren, who was UA quarterback Keith Smith's top receiver at Newbury Park High School, had enrolled with the intention of trying to walk on to the football team.
Van Buren owns two California high school receiving records but has been out of football for the last two years after run-ins with police. Colorado offered him a scholarship after his senior season in 1994 but the school rescinded the offer after he was convicted of firing a gun into his former girlfriend's house.
The Ventura County Star also reported that Van Buren was released from jail last month after a two-month stay for breaking probation. In May, Van Buren barricaded himself in his former guardian's home and threatened to kill himself and his infant son, the paper reported.
The Arizona football team had no comment.
