One club is asking for the campus community's help in raising money and donating toys for its annual Toys for Tots program.

Semper Fi is a non-profit organization dedicated to the professional development of future marine officers, said Sgt. Koichi Takagi, systems and industrial engineering junior.

Club members are selling raffle tickets to raise money to buy toys for the program. Tickets are $1 each, but Takagi said special bonuses are given to people who purchase $5 or more in tickets.

Semper Fi is also accepting new, unwrapped toys that can be dropped off at South Hall or given to any Marine or club member on campus.

Takagi said during winter break members will take the money raised and buy toys to drop off at the Tucson Toys for Tots location.

Through the program, parents will be able to choose the toys they think their children will want, Takagi said.

Last year, Semper Fi raised $2,600 for Toys for Tots. In 1994, the club raised $1,600, and it raised $500 in 1993. Takagi said he attributes the growing financial support to an increase in club membership and participation and to more sponsors. He said the club's goal this year is to raise over $5,000.

"This is the best week to do (the raffle) because it's right after Thanksgiving and everyone's in the giving mood," said Max Green, material sciences engineering senior.

Prizes for the daily raffle include T-shirts and gift baskets. The grand prize is a 21-speed bicycle worth $600.

Club members will be outside the Fiddlee Fig at the Memorial Student Union from 10 a.m. to noon through Friday. The drawing for the bicycle will be Monday at noon. Takagi said winners of the drawings do not need to be present; club members will call to notify them.
