In just a few days, many UA facilities will shut down while students rest their brains over the winter break.

The University of Arizona's senior electrical engineer, John Lane, said the shutdown from Dec. 20 to Dec. 29 will save the university about $100,000 in utilities and maintenance costs.

He said most campus buildings will be locked up and electricity will be cut for the duration of the nine-day closure.

"There will be no heating or cooling of the buildings during the shutdown," Lane said.

He said buildings housing laboratories, which must be kept open at all times, will be exceptions to the shutdown.

The UA's outlying areas, such as the university-owned houses in which a number of programs and committees are located, will be asked to shutdown on their own.

"We are asking (the outlying areas) to turn off the heaters and everything else they can," Lane said.

The closure of campus buildings will not affect students and faculty participating in Winter Session from Dec. 19 through Jan. 10.

Anne Fillmore, Winter Session program coordinator, said she is expecting more students than last year to participate in the 14-day program.

"We are expecting about 400-plus students," Fillmore said.

She said students may take up to four units in Winter Session and choose from 35 classes. Students will pay $170.50 per unit during the session.

Fillmore said although taking a class over such a short period of time is difficult, the benefits far outweigh the costs.

"It's a tough three to four hours of class per day, not to mention all the reading a studying that goes along with it, but some students believe it beats 16 weeks of class in the spring," Fillmore said.

"Also, some students have only one class they need to graduate and this is an opportunity for them to take that class."

She said Winter Session will be expanding the number of classes and students in the future.
