Police Beat

A man and a 17-year-old boy were arrested Friday on multiple charges after one of them allegedly opened a vehicle's door and set off its alarm.

According to police reports, a person flagged down a police community service officer and told the officer that two suspicious men were observed walking through the parking lots south of University Medical Center, 1501 N. Campbell Ave.

The person told police that the older man opened the door of a Jeep Cherokee and activated its alarm. The witness told police the man shut the door and headed toward UMC. Police located the man and the juvenile walking south of the medical center.

The man, Juan R. Barron, 21, of the 1000 block of East Benson Highway, and the youth, both told officers they were headed to UMC to visit a friend.

The 17-year-old told police he was on probation for auto theft and was wearing an "ankle bracelet."

The witness identified Barron and the juvenile as the two suspicious men and they were arrested, police reports stated.

While searching Barron, police found a plastic baggie containing what Barron told police was marijuana seed, the reports stated.

A screwdriver was found in the juvenile's right front pocket, police reports stated. The juvenile told police he carried it "for personal protection because he cannot carry a knife."

Barron told police he was the one who tried to take the Jeep and gave the screwdriver to the juvenile, according to police reports. Reports stated Barron also told police he pulled on the Jeep's door handle and the alarm sounded.

The owner of the Jeep told police $10 was missing, but according to police reports, neither Barron nor the juvenile were found with the money.

Barron was arrested on charges of attempted auto theft, attempted burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of marijuana. He was booked into Pima County Jail.

The juvenile was cited on charges of conspiracy to commit auto theft and possession of burglary tools. He was booked into the Pima County Juvenile Detention Center.

A female student was cited on DUI charges Saturday.

University police traveling eastbound on East Speedway Boulevard approaching North Cherry Avenue about 1:24 a.m. saw a white pickup failing to stay within the lane and swerving abruptly.

The driver, Joette M. Bingham, 18, of the 8000 block of East Rivenoak Drive, also smelled like alcohol, police reports stated.

When asked if she had been drinking, Bingham told police, "Yes, but I'm the one who drank the least and that's why I'm driving," police reports stated.

Police arrested Bingham on DUI charges due to her "driving behavior, odor of alcohol, Bingham's admission of drinking and performance on field sobriety tests."

After Intoxilyzer breath tests, Bingham was found to have a blood alcohol content of .120 and .135.

Bingham was cited on charges of DUI, DUI with a blood alcohol content of .10 or higher and failure to stay within the traffic lane. She was cited and released to her sister.

A female student reported getting about 15 harassing phone calls from two men Saturday at Graham-Greenlee Residence Hall, 610 N. Highland Ave. She told police she had asked the men to not call her. She said the two called multiple times between Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. and Jan. 17 at 3:10 p.m.

According to police reports, the two men identified themselves each time. Police advised the student to trace the calls by dialing *57. The resident told police she was willing to press charges.

A male student reported several items missing from his room and the kitchen at Alpha Tau Omega fraternity house, 1050 N. Cherry Ave.

He told university police his Pioneer stereo system, Diamondback Sorrento mountain bike and alarm clock radio were in the house when he left for winter break Dec. 15 but were missing when he returned Jan. 14. The student told police he believes the burglar entered his room through a south window by climbing the exterior wall and a balcony.

The stereo system was valued at $400, the bicycle at $500 and the alarm clock radio at $50.
