University police found 47.1 grams of marijuana in a vehicle Wednesday after pulling the driver over for expired registration.

Police stopped the 1990 Geo at East Sixth Street and North Martin Avenue. While speaking with the driver, an officer noticed the smell of "burning marijuana" coming from the passenger compartment, police reports stated.

The driver, Heather M. Leonard, 18, of the 7000 East Tanque Verde Road, was asked to step out of the car and police told Leonard they smelled marijuana.

According to police reports, Leonard denied having any marijuana in the vehicle.

The passenger, Benjamin J. Warnack, 18, of the 4000 block of East Sunrise Drive, showed police a brass smoking pipe while police and Leonard were talking, police reports stated.

Warnack told police he did not want Leonard to get in trouble for his mistake.

According to police reports, the pipe had a "green residue."

Police then brought in the police K-9 unit to search the vehicle.

The K-9 alerted police to plastic bag containing 1.9 grams of a green leafy substance in a Camel cigarette box; a rust-gold colored tin with 39.9 grams of a green leafy substance, and another plastic bag containing 5.3 grams of a green leafy substance.

According to police reports, Leonard told police the marijuana was hers.

Leonard was cited on charges of possession of marijuana and no valid operators license. Warnack was cited on a charge of possession of marijuana paraphernalia.

Both were cited and released from police headquarters.
