A student research assistant reported that someone had gained unauthorized access to an on-campus computer system.

Between Aug. 23 and 26, unauthorized access was gained to a computer system maintained by the National Center for Neurogenetic Communications, 1131 E. Second St., the research assistant told police.

The system had been asked to run a "job" that took up a "huge amount of memory," police were told. There were other signs of tampering: other "jobs" had been stopped, and the center's Internet home page had been damaged, the assistant told police.

The tampering had been traced to an account in Boulder, Colo.

The assistant told police that the center was willing to prosecute for fraud and was working with the Center for Computing and Information Technology to protect the system.University police arrested a Tucson man Thursday after a chase through city streets.

Police responded at 4:24 p.m. to a call from a construction firm in the 2600 block of North First Avenue reporting that a man wanted for giving false information to a police officer was in the firm's office.

According to police reports, the man, John Leroy Carpe, 41, of the 1800 block of East 23rd Street, used a false identification when issued a traffic citation by university police Aug. 11. He was also wanted for possession of a stolen bicycle.

When police confronted Carpe at the office, he admitted to using the identification of a "Peter Artwohl" and to signing Artwohl's name to the citation.

When informed he was under arrest, Carpe said "Fuck this shit," and ran southbound down North First Avenue.

A UAPD detective and an officer pursued Carpe down an alley, despite repeated commands to stop.

Carpe ran three-quarters of the way down the alley before turning to face the police officer.

The officer told Carpe to lie on the ground, but he refused. The officer struck Carpe with his baton, but Carpe remained standing. Carpe was struck three more times on his leg but refused to lie down. He then punched the officer and ran off again.

As police continued to tell Carpe he was under arrest, Carpe responded, "Shoot me."

Carpe ran across North First Avenue, stopping traffic, before police cornered him in a parking lot, where he jumped on top of a car and told the driver to "Take off."

The driver stopped short, and Carpe rolled down the hood of the car. The car's hood was damaged.

A third officer arrived and cut off Carpe. Carpe was then handcuffed.

Carpe was taken to Pima County Jail and booked on charges of forgery, giving false information to law enforcement, resisting arrest, aggravated assault on a peace officer, criminal damage and two counts of theft.

A member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity, 430 N. Cherry Ave., reported a homeless man living behind the house Thursday.

The fraternity member reported there were several bags of clothing stored outside.

Friday at 12:30 a.m., police found Fernando I. Mota-Sanchez, 42, of 0-100 block of East Dakota Street, behind the house. He claimed ownership of the items. Mota-Sanchez told police he did not have permission to be on the property, reports stated.

Among the plastic bags there was a briefcase containing several credit cards, identification cards and pieces of mail, which Mota-Sanchez said he had found in the trash.

Mota-Sanchez told police that he knew he should have brought the items to the police, but had not had time.

The vice president of Phi Kappa Psi told police the house would press charges against Mota-Sanchez. He was booked into Pima County Jail on charges of third degree trespassing and theft by control.
