The Arizona women's soccer team lost its season opener on Sunday, 7-1 against Montana.

"It was a very disappointing showing on our part," head coach Lisa Fraser said.

Arizona faced Brigham Young late yesterday. Scores were not available at press time.

Montana dominated the first half, scoring five goals.

Arizona senior midfielder Sheralyn Fowler scored the first goal of the game for the Grizzlies (1-0) during the fourth minute of play.

"The first goal just threw us off," sophomore Jillian Bressler said. "We were let down and knew we had to work back from a goal and then score."

Montana's Megan Bartenetti scored the second goal of the game off a rebound from a missed shot by junior midfielder Courtney Mathieson at the 10-minute mark.

Sophomore forward Karen Hardy then netted a goal for Montana from a long lead pass.

Fowler scored her second goal with a run up the left wing and junior defender Jen Whitaker ended the Grizzlies first-half offense with a penalty kick.

The Grizzlies defense held the Wildcats (0-1 overall, 0-0 in the Pacific 10 Conference) from taking any shots in the first half.

"The first half was a nightmare," Fraser said.

The Wildcats came out stronger in the second half, holding the Grizzlies to only two goals. However, Arizona was unable to overcome Montana's powerful first-half offense.

Senior co-captain Christine Keeley scored a goal off a header for the Wildcats' only goal.

Montana's Lisa Oyen ran up the left wing, scoring an unassisted goal and junior midfielder Sara Overgaag scored the last goal of the game off a rebound from Mathieson.
