By Amanda Riddle Arizona Daily Wildcat February 13, 1997 Students to vote on $1 KAMP fee in ASUA electionA $1 fee will be added to students' tuition bills if a referendum supported by KAMP student radio passes in the March Associated Students general election.KAMP was told last night by Anthony Hill, ASUA elections commissioner, that the referendum had enough signatures to be placed on the ballot. The University of Arizona's only student radio station collected 4,222 signatures in support of the referendum before its Feb. 10 deadline. The referendum states that a $1 fee would be added to each semester's tuition for five years, or until independent funding equals student fee revenue. The station hopes to raise $350,000 over five years. KAMP's goal is to purchase a 5,000-watt antenna with the capability to broadcast throughout Tucson. KAMP currently broadcasts on 1570 AM with a 30-watt antenna purchased by ASUA in the spring of 1995. KAMP needed 3,350 signatures, 10 percent of the student population, for the referendum to be put to the voters. Allen Wagner, KAMP's general manager, said their job is definitely not over yet. "We have to convince everyone to vote yes now," Wagner said. Jeff Goldberg, KAMP marketing director, said to the 60 students attending a KAMP meeting last night that the station must now decide its marketing strategy for getting votes. "This is the most crucial phase," Goldberg said. In December, the Undergraduate Senate voted unanimously to approve KAMP's proposal, which allowed KAMP to petition students. |
