What's Going On?

Thursday:

  • "Mommy, where do condoms come from?" Adele E. Clarke, Associate Professor of Sociology, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Department of History of Health Sciences @ UCSF presents "Maverick Reproductive Scientists and the Production of Contraceptives c.1915-2000," part of the Culture, Science, Technology lecture series @ Anthropology (Haury) Room 216. Showtime is 5:00 p.m. and admission is free. 621-8123

  • Does anyone else think the singer of Goldfinger sounds like Weird Al? It's nice to see a new venue in town booking shows... and even nicer when they pull in 1996's most underappreciated ska band, Reel Big Fish. They'll open for Al @ The Cage. The all-ages rock starts @ 9:00 p.m. and tix are $10

  • Is Captain Spiffy's going out of business? As part of their liquidation sale, Max Cannon of Red Meat fame will be on hand from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. to sign autographs and chat with fans @ the comic shop near the corner of Park and University.

Friday:

  • So what, you're not in the mood for love this afternoon. At least you've got passion - and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies is there to accommodate. The lecture? "Oil, Finance and Politics in the Arab Persian Gulf," by Jean-Francois Seznec, Professor of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and President of the Lafayette Group. The place? Franklin Center for Middle Easter Studies, Room 204 @ 4:00 p.m.. 621-5450

  • The ska continues with Mustard Plug @ The Cellar in the Student Union... Sick of Dave's Big Deluxe yet? They'll open the show around 8:30 p.m. and kick off this $5 all-ages show.

Saturday:

  • A gospel retelling of the ancient tragedy of Oedipus? A friend who works for Centennial Hall says that, if nothing else, this production of Broadway's "The Gospel at Colonus" will be a spectacular undertaking with lights, pyrotechnics, and a truly huge choir. UA Presents offers 2 for 1 student admissions to the 2:00 p.m. matinee shows on Sat/Sun. 621-3341

Upcoming:

  • Mark your social calendar! Olivia Tremor Control, deemed "wired" by Wired magazine, comes to The Cellar on the 19th. If that wasn't enough, you can also witness the spectacular return of our own, local phenomenon Bargain Town. It'll be all-ages @ 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $4.
